We are now only talking about the normal radio systems such as Bosch, Shelly, Eve, etc.
The premium systems like KNX, Loxone, etc. will of course remain better, especially KNX, but for KNX you need the wiring and that is the big problem with retrofitting.

Matter and the current island systems actually have mostly retrofitters as customers.

If someone currently has a working system, they will not switch, but if they want to expand their current system and their current system is compatible with Matter, then they would take a Matter-compatible product to expand it (which their system might not even have offered yet).

That is supposed to be regulated by the Matter licensing.
All products that get the Matter logo through licensing shall be 100% compatible, i.e. when searching for a new product you only have to look for the Matter logo (that is the plan).

Which examples would you name for wireless retrofit solutions in the smart home sector?

Why should someone switch to Matter with a functioning system (which doesn't change the system itself, only the radio standard is different)? Matter is an add-on, but in my opinion not decisive for purchasing. What do you want to make "smart" and how? Radio or Wi-Fi? If not Wi-Fi, then why not?

The official radio standards of Matter are

Wifi, Thread, and Bluetooth (only for setup), and there is also LAN.

All other radio standards must be integrated via their own manufacturer bridges. This way, for example, a Bosch sensor can switch a Tp-Link socket.

I’m starting from zero now and want to start as future-proof as possible with wireless, so I actually thought Matter would be the best choice.
I also thought that manufacturers will switch to Matter anyway in the future, but that will most likely take a while because their own systems are compatible with Matter via bridges and therefore have no time pressure.

I want to start first with roller shutter switches and lighting and then expand gradually.

Behind the TV, I would also like to retrofit Ambilight (without camera); you probably can’t get around Philips Hue there anyway.

In the dining area, the lamps should be dimmable and the white tone adjustable, and more lamps should be switchable, and in the living room they should also be colored to include them in the Ambilight.

That would be the start for now and then keep expanding.

Later also window sensors (preferably those hidden in the handle like the Hoppe Enocean ones).

Shellys also work excellently for that. Or Sonoff. A 20€ LED strip from Aliexpress works. With WiFi, app, Alexa and even camera integration (currently only from the phone). Any system can do that as well. I don't have that, because I don't dim but have different lamps for different scenarios. That excludes actuators like Shelly. So the HUE lamp (or Ikea or whatever) and put it on the WiFi. What does that mean? So far you are not doing anything for which you need Matter.

Yes, we are talking about systems for beginners with manageable functions and possibilities.

No, there are no problems with retrofitting, just to be clear. But this thread is not about KNX and co.

Yes, certainly. But among them there is a not insignificant number of those who nevertheless need (semi-)professional help. Even just to connect and set up a simple Shelly.

Why should they do that? Why should someone take a Matter compatible product if the other one also does the job? Only in the single case when one needs one or the other function that can only be solved with Matter. But then additional costs for the bridge, etc. come along, and some wonder if that is even necessary.

So the plan...

Yes, you don’t have to explain interoperability to us here. However, there are very, very many "buts". It always sounds very nice and yes, you can then switch the socket. But suddenly the status cannot be read anymore or is not transmitted when a "foreign sensor" switches, or the consumption data can only be read via the TP-Link app, etc.

Umm, no. Then you are an early adopter with all the pros and cons. But yes, those also have to exist.

Reasons?

How can you retrofit KNX without having to tear open the walls for the bus cable?
Would you equip the whole house with KNX RF? I thought that KNX RF was only for KNX extensions and not suitable as a pure wireless solution.

If, for example, the wireless system does not have a roller shutter switch, then you take the roller shutter switch from another manufacturer that is also compatible with Matter.

For the thread, you don’t need a bridge, you only need a border router, which can later be Amazon Echos or, for example, Google Nest Wifi Router/Access Point.

With Matter, it’s just about being able to combine different manufacturers like with KNX as you want.

what exactly would you recommend if you were retrofitting a smart home? (without having to tear open the walls)
You also have to have a wireless connection.

Should you take WiFi? I could imagine there might be problems if there are too many devices on WiFi
(what happens if you get a new router – do you have to reconnect every device to the WiFi?)

Or would you recommend another wireless standard? If yes, which one?

Can you say exactly which system or type of system you would recommend?
