Exactly. And of course you have to talk to them! Openly, clearly, directly. Friendly but firm. Normal people understand that. Antisocial people do not.

So it is.

If I don’t say anything and there are no cigarette disposal points there (aka ashtrays), I’m not really surprised by the cigarette butts on the ground.

If I put some there and say: "Friends, smoke however you want, but please throw the cigarette butts in here," and they still end up flying around, then that’s rude.

Set up ashtrays A pot of coffee with it then there should be no more cigarettes added for now. I am of the opinion that we had a clean construction site and yet a few things were left lying around, including some cigarettes. Under the driveway and under the terrace they do not disturb. The other trash can be picked up and thrown into the garbage container. Sometimes there is still a lot of useful stuff in there. Tools and materials. Shovel, brush, bits, wrench, pipes, Siga tape etc.

We had converted a former service apartment into an office in the spring. Old eaves were opened, and the foundation was dug up and freshly sealed with bitumen. Things came to light, phew. Jägermeister was popular on construction sites in 1968. And Lütjenburger Doppelkorn. And a lot of Eiche beer from Kiel, Eiche in the evening, Leiche in the morning... and quite well-preserved Reval packs. We also discovered an issue of the magazine "Wochenend" in the attic. There was still cleavage on the cover photo.

You can exaggerate everything if you have no other problems.

Of course something is sometimes left lying around. That’s normal. With our last house build it was also "relatively" clean. Still, one thing or another was left behind. Once it was a bit too much: I called the executing company (even though we built with a general contractor). That was then cleaned up a few days later. Obviously, a construction site is never clinically clean. But precautions like ashtrays, trash disposal options, etc. already help a lot. A kind word and (genuine) interest in the work of the individuals are also always helpful. Simply giving orders is not quite the right way (but you know that — just from your own work environment, right?). You always have to keep an eye on it in the garden. A popular game is "burying waste" — usually just superficially and easily detected with a practiced eye....
