From the front door, a path goes straight down to the street about 4-5m (The path is as wide as the front door)

Another option would be
Green = video doorbell
Red = ekey
and place mailbox on a stand somewhere and not hang it on the house wall

What are your experiences with freestanding mailboxes?

I was told by acquaintances that if it is not placed or hung under a roof or overhang, the mail would constantly get wet when it rains. Especially if something thicker is sticking out on top.

Just drive/walk through an existing residential area and take a look at the mailboxes. There you can find not only the location but also models that you like. We did the same some time ago when we replaced ours. In our residential area, a maximum of 10% of the mailboxes are mounted on the wall.
