We faced the same consideration. We decided on a sauna in the upstairs bathroom. It will be installed soon, so I cannot provide any experience yet. I think we will use the sauna more often this way because everything is together, the bathroom is heated anyway, and I don't have to "prepare" everything in the basement first. Also, then no extra cleaning of a separate area by the sauna is needed ;) . However, we also have a separate parents' area, so we can relax in the bedroom and there is a private balcony. We don't want to use the sauna with friends either; children are welcome but only alone, it is meant to remain a family sauna for us, so the sauna does not need to be centrally accessible in our home. For many friends, the sauna was added later and then placed in the basement. Spontaneous evening sauna sessions are rare because first the basement needs to be heated.
