Ah yes, the good old days. When telephones still had rotary dials, women belonged behind the stove, and environmental protection was a foreign word. The architect gets paid to design THE right house for you. He doesn’t have to think deeply; he studied precisely to plan a house that suits you. But for what reason do you want to spend a lot of money on that? Not only are the elements expensive, you also need appropriate static calculations and good execution. And the rest is like with a normal roof. From my gut feeling I estimate up to 100% surcharge compared to the “normal” roof, which is still more flexible (you simply can’t just add a dormer or roof window here and there with a solid roof). You want to build yourself? Wow, design and build yourself – and with all your wishes regarding location and equipment... But well, you are already a bit “different” in your other threads anyway.

I already did it that way back then, and it worked really well. Since I deal professionally, among other things, with large railway construction projects, I already trusted myself at the time to plan and allocate everything myself, sometimes with very close integration between external and in-house services. That doesn’t mean I do everything myself, but that I make sure all the gears mesh perfectly with each other. I have to network people together all day long, and a house project is not so different in that regard. In the end, this definitely leads to less trouble, saves costs, and results in a better house. Provided you basically have a good knack for finding the executing companies. But I have always been very good at that.

And that you design your own house best yourself – that really shouldn’t be so exotic. Otherwise, I also don’t let others design, but design myself.

The architect says that too Everyone should do what they can. Imagine your clients think they can do your job better themselves. I could easily do that too, save money and get a better result. Cool!

Of course, that only works if you can do it. If you can't do something, you have to let others do it. Fortunately, I can do quite a lot...

Yes, among other things, that is what I get paid for...

In any case, I can report that the house, which I largely planned alone down to the last detail when I was in my mid-20s, is still faithfully serving its purpose even after 20 years. There have been no problems so far, it looks like new, there has been no storm damage, there was never water in the basement, there have been no break-ins, the indoor climate is very pleasant all year round, so I can probably assume that I didn't do too much wrong back then.
