Yes, you have to! I believe the date of birth applies, so you can "get into trouble" if you switch too late. Therefore, it is basically best to switch early; the minus is refunded in the tax declaration.

It could happen that way, but what if not? Plots without the local resident model are expensive; for example, 15 km away from me a plot is being offered for 235,200 (588 sqm) in a bidding process... I’m guessing about 300,000 roughly! Alternative: switch to a condominium, there prices for 100 sqm 3-room apartments start at a "moderate" 500,000 (rented). I believe our salary is not bad, but home ownership will no longer be affordable for 80-90 percent of Germans, at least in my region, sadly but true!

Regarding the heating, it occurs to me that we have an old building savings contract that would mature for allocation in 3 years with a building savings amount of 20,000. I could even use that for the heating if push comes to shove?

The application for the change of tax class must be submitted at the latest seven months before the month in which maternity leave begins. Accordingly, a maximum of two months remain after conception to make the tax class change for parental allowance.
