Different perspective: You live there for 15 years and put down roots, make friends in the neighborhood, and don’t want to move anymore. It’s not even that unlikely. In this respect, you could also shape everything according to your wishes now. At least that’s our way.

Small update: I actually painted the staircase (one of two, the second one is still to come) white last week and I’m thrilled about it.

In case anyone is looking for a way to change a somewhat old-fashioned staircase but can’t replace, cover, or do anything else with the steps due to the construction: chalk paint – it actually works. Clean beforehand, two coats of varnish, already looks really good. I might go over it a third time for the perfect result, but it already looks very good now. And the hallway is so much brighter.

Thank you for your contribution. Please show a photo of the now lighter staircase. Which brand is your chalk paint from?

Gladly. In the before-and-after comparison, you can clearly see how the entire hallway looks brighter and the light less yellowish. It wasn’t the same day, but basically similar lighting conditions and perspective. The ground floor staircase is still missing, so I don’t have a photo of the whole project yet. I first photographed from the angle where the lower staircase is less visible. I used the paint from "Painting the Past" in Eggshell; the sealer is already included, as well as the cleaner from the brand and also the brushes, etc. Overall, the materials cost about €250, plus €100 for a staircase platform so we could paint the upper floor staircase from below (thankfully, my husband took care of that part). As it looks, there will still be plenty of paint left. Yes, amazing! What a difference. I hope you did it for yourselves and not for potential buyers. What will the next project be? The basement stairs and then? May we be there?

Actually, this thread has really helped me to straighten out all the wishes/to-dos in my head (thanks again to everyone for that), and ultimately to dare to accept the house as it is and then put my own stamp on it. I was really afraid of painting, hesitated and thought about it forever, I think about 5-6 months. After this thread, the thought wouldn’t let me go anymore, that this is ours, so I’ll make *our* house out of it, the way we want it. And not live here like renting, with the thought of not "disfiguring" anything because it might not be liked later.

There is no basement, but there is a plank of oak parquet flooring for the living room here for testing, that will probably be the next thing after the stairs. Wish list: Living room floor Paint this and that Next few years: Repave the terrace and put a canopy over the front door New country-style doors ... much later then: Attic conversion And eventually the kitchen and the main bathroom. Both are 15 years old and actually still very nice, just a bit out of fashion and with the first signs of aging, but that will take a while. But of course, the money has to be there first.

(In between, the heating will be due sometime, and maybe photovoltaic on the carport would make sense instead of something you do "just" for the look. Unfortunately, it’s not possible on the roof, as we are completely shaded by the neighbor’s huge oak.)

I’m happy to report if there is interest.
