Is the building plan reliable? When to terminate the rental apartment?

I would like to ask you how long before moving into your new house you terminated the lease of your previous rental apartment, at which point in the house construction phase or how long before the move you consider appropriate to be on the safe side. We have the usual (?) notice period of 3 months.

The background of my question is probably known: Not to pay rent longer than necessary, but also not to end up having to live in a hotel for (several) weeks and having to store furniture. We have recently moved to this region and therefore cannot temporarily stay with friends or relatives.

It is not time for us yet, but we will only give notice once we are told the handover date. For us, it is even two apartments because we do not live together yet. Since my boyfriend already lives where our house is being built, we need his apartment as a temporary solution for my school-aged child, as there will definitely be an overlap with the new school year. I would rather bite the bullet and pay rent for 1-2 more months. That then gives enough time to organize the move and possibly wait for any necessary defect repairs that might make a quick move-in difficult. Also, there is the new kitchen. There can always be delays there, no matter how carefully you plan. I have had to manage for two months with two small children without a kitchen. That was really annoying. At least we had a fridge and a microwave.

That depends solely on your construction company. And only you know them. If you still have to do some work yourselves after the handover, then additionally by you.

We had a precise plan and handover date. The overlap (house/apartment) was about 2 weeks. During that time, we moved and spruced up the apartment (renovated).

2 errors in thinking: 1. You don't have to stay _there_, you could also stay at your old residence. Or somewhere completely different ;) 2. even if you were to stay somewhere, the furniture would have to be stored temporarily. Don't people have to renovate nowadays? I would plan a rental buffer. Even if it is only for moving slowly, a soft move. But that is not an option for you.

We had taken care of finding a new tenant ourselves back then and were able to get out of the contract early that way. Depending on the popularity of the location, this can happen quite quickly.

We are facing this situation right now as well. We have agreed that we would rather pay rent for one month longer than move into a hotel. Also, you can move in first and then renovate the old apartment calmly. Currently, a few delivery times are uncertain for us. That’s why we always decide spontaneously at the end of the month. We have a 3-month notice period but rent of 550 €, so quite manageable even with simultaneous loan repayment.
