I don't know how much effort is possible/wanted, but I would completely turn the apartment upside down. Small bedroom where the storage room and kitchen are now. Kitchen next to the bathroom (Then the question of the water connection no longer arises). Tear down the hallway walls to the living room, dining table in front of the balcony. Super open, almost loft-like. But it's also a matter of taste...
