Is house construction financing possible at all?

Whereas the garden can be easily adapted to the desired effort by designing it accordingly. A large vegetable garden requires corresponding work, as does a garden that should look as if the gardener just came this morning. And if it ever becomes too much for me, I just look for a teenager in the neighborhood who wants to earn some money by mowing the lawn ;) But I wouldn't move to an apartment with a mini balcony just for that. I've had that for the last 12 years, and it's slowly enough for me.

A property mainly does one thing: immobilize. In the end, a property is always a ball and chain and binds you on different levels.

On the one hand, you become significantly less flexible: Yippee – you found your dream job and there’s a 10k higher annual salary. Oh, but it’s 200 km away without home office. Meh – just packing up and moving is difficult.

On the other hand, a property binds a chunk of money every month anew. Be it initially during financing or later for maintenance. Sure, you can let a property rot to some extent and simply do nothing. I wouldn’t like that...

Another aspect is that a property constantly takes time. Whether it’s filling out the new property tax declaration, gardening, small repairs and renovation work, arranging appointments with craftsmen. And honestly: something always breaks and you have to take care of it. When renting, it was always just a call or email and the landlord took care of it.

What do you mean by responsibility? A house is even more responsibility that comes on top. Sometimes, the responsibility I have towards my child is enough for me...

Next generation – what? I simply cannot imagine, no matter how hard I try, that my child as an adult would ever want to take over our apartment when we (latest possible time) are dead. At the current life expectancy of my wife and me, she would be about 55 years old by then. The only thing she would still be interested in about the place is the sales proceeds. I assume she will already have something of her own by then. She will receive some start-up capital from us by her 18th birthday.

Next generation – again what? Who says that in our interconnected and globalized world children will even stay anywhere near their place of origin? My wife lives 400 km from her parents and her sister lived in England for the last five years and has only been back in Germany for a few weeks now. Interest of both ever moving back into the parental home = 0.0. So why a house for the next generation?

I already find the idea of living in the same property until death totally absurd. First, you live in it with your spouse and children and later then as two or alone in a completely oversized living space, whose ongoing maintenance costs are significantly higher than in an apartment, whose outdoor area’s upkeep doesn’t overwhelm you because it’s outsourced and therefore doesn’t rot. But hey: after all, a house is a feeling of life and quality of life...
