The reunification brought up many detailed issues and yes, Auto Germany can face a huge problem. But instead of denying it and acting protectionist, which is globally insane anyway, one should take the opportunity to change and adapt.
What is the music industry today kicking themselves for, fighting illegal downloads instead of embracing the form of user demand earlier? After that, they tried to crush legal streaming and now they’re annoyed that someone else is making the big profits because the platforms, the ecosystem, belong to someone else and they only provide content.
See car manufacturers who think they will never be mere contract manufacturers. Wait and see.
The car discussion does not have to be reduced to the environment.
Where highways are today and constantly being widened, actually fiber optics and power lines belong there. Where main roads and parking lots are in the city, living space belongs there.
Individual transport as we know it today simply gets in the way.
Not to mention the fates and costs caused by human error in road traffic.
And to come back to the environment: batteries are dirty, combustion engines too, just differently. Batteries are still technologically at the beginning, more will come. Combustion engines, well.
The most environmentally friendly car is always the one that is not built at all. That means reducing the number of cars in Germany to one third. That works. For that, Karsten’s usage model is needed.
In 30 years there will still be cars. VW will still be building cars, but maybe their logo won’t be on the hood anymore.
And if it is, that I am most certain of, they will no longer sell them to end customers. (High)technology is not sold, usage rights are sold. From ownership of a thing to usage fees for a service.
