I am by no means under the misconception that in Munich you generally have golden spoons in your paycheck. But what is probably a fact: you would need them there at least, and without a capital city surcharge even on the income side you don't get far. But the nurse apparently still doesn't have it :-(

While reading a Leipzig daily newspaper today, you came to my mind again: Due to the coal phase-out, two places will now not be "undermined" after all, the already abandoned houses are being sold/renovated, as well as the undeveloped plots of land. 80% of the two places belong to the coal mining company, which will now discuss with the mayor what can/should be done with the property. Maybe there are also places in your desired region where plots of land and houses are unexpectedly coming up for sale.

Apart from the opportunities for the OP, this is doubly macabre: years ago, plots and houses were "purchased by expropriation." Now the assets are certainly worth much more - and the coal company is negotiating about resale. Under these circumstances, it should only be allowed to sell everything again at the same (purchase) prices - with a right of first refusal for the former residents.

As far as I know, the people received newer and better houses in return, but I do not know the details. If things are as you say, I agree with you.

We did that back then because our landlord wanted to sell and asked us. With a lot of misgivings, we then bought, even though we never wanted to own a home. Because we didn’t want to move out, the price was fair and manageable, and we thought, despite all the naysayers (who would buy anything in Stötteritz!), it probably wouldn’t lose value.

Regarding the original question: A friend found her house in Beucha through intense word-of-mouth. From an older lady without internet-savvy descendants who wanted to get rid of her house through intense word-of-mouth. And she actually sold based on sympathy, because she was promised (and it was kept) that the house would not be demolished. It is located in an older settlement, I’d guess from the 30s to 50s, where quite a few older people still live. However, you then have to accept that these houses are sometimes, um, special.
