Drink crates and bottles? Where have you stored them at your place?

We have the very square pantry (cooled) attached to the kitchen. That’s where the "hand stock" potatoes, drinks, and whatever else belongs there are stored. The rest of the drink crates are stored in the utility room. The 25KG sack of potatoes is kept at my parents' potato cellar.

Now I am slowly beginning to understand what people want with these pantries. Hoarding and stockpiling still seem to be really popular in some places. Fummelbrett, do you ever have anything fresh to eat at your place? If yes, then you shop at least once a week. So why do you stockpile such quantities?

I also remember from my parents that the basement was always full. When coffee was on sale, they would just buy 20 packs, the same with other things that were cheap at the time. When I look at the flyers today, the items are constantly rotating in the ads, so you don’t need those quantities anymore. We don’t do prepping ;) A crate of water in glass bottles would still probably be sensible in case the tap water has to be shut off (which is what we otherwise exclusively drink). I tend to prefer buying larger quantities too, for example 10 packs of flour at once, because we constantly need it, and I don’t feel like lugging it around all the time with small purchases, better to do it properly once. Same with everything else in cans/boxes. The only thing I’ve really stopped storing a lot of is frozen stuff because it just doesn’t taste good after a while. And potatoes – well, a 5kg sack we can’t use up all at once, and they sprout so quickly sometimes, so they have to be kept cool. For the rest it’s almost irrelevant. And if a civil war were to break out, we’d have other problems than not enough supplies in the utility room/basement and those wouldn’t help us without defense installations anyway... Oh, and flour and stuff I wouldn’t store in the utility room either, we’ll also do laundry in there, and despite the exhaust air, that’s probably not a good combination. But there are kitchen cabinets for that.

Also a shock for me what people still store! Canned goods? I have never had any at home. Drinks: we drink tap water. I also buy potatoes in 2.5kg, I don’t eat potatoes every day anyway. Of course everyone has to decide for themselves, but personally I don’t need a year’s supply. I have to shop 1-2 times a week anyway because of fruits and vegetables, then I take a pack of flour with me in case it runs out. With today’s opening hours (REWE until 10 p.m.) you can still get everything in an emergency and in my opinion you don’t have to hoard.

Our refrigerator has a light on ;)

In our freezer, the temperature is the same as in the other rooms. We also don't have heating there. Humidity should be controlled by the exhaust/controlled residential ventilation. We have a separate utility room upstairs where the laundry is done. It is important to me that the room is not entered with street shoes or something like that because of dirt. In the freezer room, we have installed an Ikea kitchen unit. There is a cabinet for pasta and such. Drink crates, recycling glass, and the yellow sack are also there. And a second fridge. Microwave and air fryer as well.

For 2 sqm of drink crates and a few cans??? :D

I have canned goods... still those I moved in with. Feels like it. Crazy, mostly we buy fresh as needed. In one corner there is emergency water... 6 x 1.5 liters... we will drink that soon to buy new ones. Everything kept as reserve in the cupboard becomes old :(

I do it like you. And our supermarket around the corner is very well stocked. It closes at half past seven though, but a quick trip after work always does good.
