We also have to build with a basement because the plot slopes 3m over 22m.

You really have to think twice about spending €30k on filling or taking €60k in hand and using the excavation.

The initial planning without a basement was a struggle because the floor plan with the utility/technical room at 147m2 drove us to despair. Now we are planning with 132m2 living space without usable space in the living area and are not shrinking in terms of living space.

I also think it makes a huge difference how you set up the basement. If you lay a nice vinyl floor there, it immediately gives a completely different impression than white slaughterhouse tiles.

I had compared two variants beforehand (on a very simple basis of catalog prices, roughly estimated) - house with 5 rooms and a basement - house with 5 rooms and an additional utility room on the ground floor, without a basement The second variant was significantly cheaper, so we do not have a basement. I find that unfortunate and would have liked to have a basement (house technology, well-tempered storage, workshop).

I can only agree with that. We are currently also building with a basement, 2 full floors. Our plot is 1400 sqm - nevertheless, we would not have wanted to do without the basement. However, we also have a two-meter slope on the left side of the property... We now have our office in the basement with normal windows and a light well.

I can still remember my childhood. We lived in a 1930s townhouse, two stories. Below us, and above were Grandma and Grandpa. There was always a damp, musty basement, painted with that pigsty lime. Downstairs stored the coal, the potatoes, the apples, the sealed jars, and there was a laundry room with a huge tub heated by coal, for boiling laundry. That’s where we kids were bathed too; there was no other hot water in the house. Only tile stoves and a cook stove. Everything obsolete today. Where did Mom store her things? Surely not in the damp basement, but the stairs went up above the second floor to the attic. It was completely boarded, and it had those zinc windows so the chimney sweep could climb out. There were old cabinets and shelves with all sorts of stuff in them. Also salami sausages and the ham hung there. And the clothesline was there too. Remembering that, we are building such an attic again. With windows. With stairs. Who knows, maybe with salami sausage? In any case, that will be the basement. Karsten

The classic dry attic floor is cold in winter and hot in summer. Perfect for drying laundry (or sausage; apples only in winter), hardly suitable as a winecellar. So it is not comparable.
