A counter-running shed roof can be described as a staggered gable roof - is the building authority lenient there?
However, I have to disagree with the last sentence, because if you align the roof surfaces in the north-south direction (if permitted), then you do have the south orientation for the solar thermal system?!
With a hip roof, the roof surface for an adequate solar thermal system looks rather meager, since the hip roof tapers and the south roof barely provides the minimum area for a solar thermal system.

I do think that a counter-running shed roof would be possible. However, the idea is more to build the large window front facing south, because of the light effects.
That would then also make the consideration of a (possibly planned for later) solar system irrelevant, right?
