The classic city villa is my avatar image along with a hipped roof (for us 22°). At least, that is what many construction companies mean by it in their brochures below. That does not mean that every city villa has to look like that. It is just the most common variant.
A gable roof has the advantage that the roof surface facing south can be larger (if the house is properly oriented). (see 2 contributors above). A hipped roof is less suitable for this since a distribution on 3 sides does not make sense. (if my surface is 3x as large distributed over 3 roofs, the output is naturally higher than if I only have 1 roof with 1x surface). Furthermore, the hipped roof has a flatter shape (smaller angle), which benefits the solar system in the warmer season (and is worse in winter).
I also find the variant from pNo worth considering. With a proper knee wall in the attic, one could even really use this space (living area). For us, the roof is not usable except for storage. (highest point ~1.5 meters)
