Depends on the water prices, it doesn't cost 5 euros or more everywhere. And if it gets too expensive, a well is put in the garden and that's that.

But you are strict with the rule "first the bell, then the gift" ;-)

For the environment, the rigole has the advantage, i.e. the precipitation buffering device. If it also stores ("cistern"), advantages for the garden owner (but also the soft water shower user - depending on what the water is used for) are added. The "cistern only" (without rigole) brings nothing for the general water management.

See my post. And many factors play a role. A) Size of the garden. Our property is about 1,500 sqm. With 100 € p.a. you don’t get far. B) Size of the roof = amount of water that flows into the cistern. We are getting a 13.5x13.5m bungalow. So large roof area = lots of rainwater. C) Conditions/requirements. If someday drinking water can no longer be used for the garden, it becomes interesting.

With falling groundwater levels? Around here, you have to drill about 100m to reach the groundwater. That really pays off...

The day when drinking water is no longer allowed to be used for the garden is already in the past in many regions. In addition, there is the option to connect the washing machine (soft water).

That of course also depends on the region. I only need to go down a few meters, there it is no problem and can also be done by yourself.
