Is an automatic garden irrigation system without a cistern worthwhile?

Our lawn survived everything last year without watering and without turning brown (we have drought-resistant grass). Would you say the effort is worth it to install an automatic irrigation system? We would first have to lay the water connection for the automatic irrigation before extending the terrace, as the pipe would have to run under the terrace. We always have to water by hand in front of the house anyway, since we don’t have a water connection in front of the house.

I personally would not want to do without it. The garden is also a bit larger and I have a 76,000-liter cistern. If you had no problems last year, I wouldn’t install one. If it does get hot for a long time, you can also water those few square meters manually with a hose or simply connect a sprinkler to the hose.

Yes, I would also install that without hesitation with a cistern.

but if we have to take the water 100% from the drinking water supply (with the above-ground water tanks from, for example, the garden house roof you don’t get very far) it’s something different

True, we could put a ground sleeve into the flower bed where I simply connect the garden hose and can then water everything with it, but it just doesn’t work fully automatically

You can simply connect an irrigation timer to the faucet and then lay such drip hoses in the beds. It costs less than 100 euros in total, and you can change it anytime. Maybe it also makes sense to have a separate outdoor water meter installed; then you don't pay sewage charges for it. You have to calculate that.

You don't paint or wallpaper your living room either, do you? It also only serves the appearance. For those who use their garden, it is a substitute living room in good weather. You don't want to look at dried-up grass there.

Honestly, I never paint. I only have plaster as wall covering – that’s completely enough for me. Unfortunately, I have to write "irony" now, because you’re not allowed to wink.

Seriously. The withered grass (which, despite everything, has remained manageable in recent years) hardly interests anyone here in the Lower Rhine region. But the properties are usually larger, and we don’t want to waste water completely. It doesn’t harm the lawn either.
Therefore, I stick to the opinion that brown grass doesn’t matter at all. I prefer to enjoy the wonderful flower beds and blooming plants. THAT is what makes a garden, not just a green (or brown) and boring area.
