I keep my air source heat pump running continuously at 22 degrees. From April, I then set it down to 15 degrees. This way, it turns off by itself and only heats the water once a day (when the sun is shining). I have determined this as the optimal setting for us. Currently, I have about 22-23 degrees indoor temperature with 0-4 degrees outside temperature. When the sun shines stronger during the day, the interior heats up even more anyway (due to the large window areas) and the underfloor heating regulates that by itself. The air source heat pump then, of course, consumes less.

At night, the outside temperature drops, so the return flow target rises. The heat pump then supplies heat that is not actually needed.
In general, I would try to avoid running air-water heat pumps unnecessarily at night because the heat source is usually colder than during the day ;-)

Since the house should not cool down, the heat is needed. In a new building, the heat demand is manageable. So the heat pump can simply run at low power. It is efficient.

Sure, it’s also colder faster in the dark than outside ;) But better to let it run at low power than to really push hard in the morning. That’s not really efficient or gentle on the equipment.
