What do you actually save if you build without a basement? A concrete slab surely costs around 10,000 euros, right?
A basement maybe 30,000 - 40,000 euros, leaving a difference of 20,000 - 30,000 euros.
If you now build a utility room above ground (15m² in size) and pay about 1,500 euros per sqm for it, then this room costs another good 20,000 euros. So what are you saving now? Besides, you also have the "extra square meters" on the first floor and consequently have to pay for them as well.
Can someone explain this to me?

Even with a basement, you need a slab foundation - but not a strip foundation.

No one can really tell you exactly where and how you save money - even with these great per sqm prices, you won’t get much further, because when it comes to a utility room, you’re certainly not paying 1500 euros or more per sqm.

But what you have identified quite well: you don’t only have to create space on the ground floor, but automatically above as well...

And in times when land prices in many metropolitan areas are beyond 200-400 euros, building above ground is quite expensive.

As they say: it depends...

I would never assume that someone has no money because they didn’t build a basement, but on the other hand, I find these totally ridiculous hoarder thoughts of people simply insane, who apparently have to convince themselves and others like a mantra that a basement is only a disposal center, party or hobby room of past generations.

With us, a fitness room, multifunction TV room, washing and bathroom, technical room, and a storage room are planned. The rooms are all well placed as ME in the basement. At 600 euros per sqm of building land above ground, however, it is also not in my budget, nor are there any large building plots available.

Unfortunately, we do not like pumpkins... But I can gladly give you the recipe for the baked apple jam... Here, it is preferably eaten by the spoonful...

I lived for 10 years without a basement in my "single" condo and I often thought it was simply stupid. I am a tinkerer in my free time, which includes my motorcycle and my car audio hobby. And I couldn’t fully enjoy that without major obstacles, I always had to go to my parents if I wanted to saw or drill something. Everything had to be stored in the utility room in the apartment, including oil, tires, spare parts. Yes, according to the fire department, you are not allowed to store such things in a garage. We only had a shared garage here where everyone in the building has access. Now in the house, there simply had to be a basement, in which, due to the slight hillside location, we even integrated a granny flat with about 55 m². The rest is basement and heating room, even if I only go down there once a week, it’s an advantage. However, we still planned a utility room as well, directly next to the kitchen, for daily groceries, drinks, cleaning supplies, toolbox, etc. And someday there will be a sauna in the basement :P
