Is building a basement still justified today?

Hm, we also couldn't imagine doing without the basement.

There would be a house connection room/drying room where the meter box, SAT and LAN come together, plus a washing machine and dryer as well as a lifting system in the sump pump. Then a guest room with daylight window/bevel, guest shower bathroom, a storage room and a 32 sqm sports/party/gaming room.

All rooms are connected to the controlled residential ventilation/heat recovery, all rooms except HAR and storage have underfloor heating.

In the large room there will be a bar with water connection, projector, screen, sound system... Then a soundproof door, and you can really crank it up nicely.

Actually, I still need another room down there, but adding a basement under the garage would have been too complicated and expensive, as it would have had to be supported against the neighbor. To make better use of the space, we moved the heating and ventilation systems out of the basement and planned them in the attic.

We just moved and no longer have a basement. For cost reasons, we decided against it. So far, everything fits in the utility room: cleaning supplies, home technology, and currently beverage crates. Washing machine and soon dryer included. We have a garage with an additional room, an attic (winter project), and plan to build a garden shed by the end of winter. If it gets too much, we'll just have to take some things to the flea market.

Sounds familiar to me.

I find a basement justified whenever a truly essential usable room for the builders can/must be accommodated there. An office, hobby room, workshop, etc. absolutely belong to me. One storage room less. I have now become a fan of hillside plots. Below, 2 living rooms facing the garden and 2 basement rooms. They are just relatively rare.

A cellar was definitely a must for us. It simply offers flexibility. For sports, hobbies, children, workshop, storage possibilities, etc.

One goes around in circles: Small garden, little yield, few tubers, etc. Large garden --> space for a garden shed. So you will always be able to reason that a cellar is not necessary. Practically, it is purely a question of money.

If building were not so expensive, there would also be more basements.

With children, I wouldn't even know where to put the stuff. Especially since carrying it up to the attic is not much fun either.
