We have matte black Steinberg Series 100 built-in fittings in the bathroom and guest WC. Thanks to the water softener system, we hardly have to deal with limescale stains; at most, there are a few spots on the rain shower coming from the ceiling, which we do not dry after every use. During installation, one has to proceed very carefully, as the coating is not very robust.

Whether black is perceived as modern, trending, "80s" or whatever doesn't matter – personal taste counts. We find that the very simple shape, combined with the color contrast to the walls, creates very nice accents. In the picture, the fittings in the guest WC (with construction worker stains on the clay plaster wall..)

Black is a bitch, whether on the car, window frames, kitchen, or fixtures. I think you can do it, but you really have to weigh whether the increased cleaning effort is worth it to you.

Certainly a trend topic, like so much from the 80s...

We sampled our bathrooms last week and I had been thinking for a long time about whether I wanted a black faucet, because at the moment I find it very stylish; it would have been, amusingly, exactly the built-in faucet from Steinberg for the guest WC that Hampshire mentioned. But since I like matte stainless steel EVEN better and otherwise find these black/anthracite trend items rather too cold and contrasting (especially black kitchens or anthracite-colored windows..etc..not really my thing), the worry was too great that I wouldn’t want to see it in 5 years. However, it could fit well with your overall color scheme and if that’s what you like right now, why not? When it comes to cleaning.. honestly, then you shouldn’t build a lot of things anymore that are just meant to be beautiful (e.g. mullioned windows or country kitchens with panels :) but what I would recommend to you: ask now about the surcharge (with black usually outrageous because it’s just not common enough yet), a washbasin faucet alone usually goes, but for it to look good, everything (towel holder, shower faucet, flush button, toilet brush holder, etc.) should be in black, which according to our plumber once led to a client having €30,000 in additional costs on the list for 2 bathrooms—and that was only the switch from chrome to black; the more stylish washbasin and the sink that didn’t look like it was from the 90s were not yet included :)

Ok, that's crazy. My love for black wouldn't go that far. Although I actually only want the fittings in black. The flush button can be white as far as I'm concerned.

I personally am not a fan of following trends when it comes to house construction, because they fade quickly and then you end up with a house that is totally out of style from 2021-2025 and no longer after that. Everything that is relatively or totally fixed should, in my opinion, be kept simple and timeless.
It would also be way too prone to dirt for my taste. Basically, I don't find it ugly as long as it is well combined.

I think the topic of "cleaning" is given quite a high priority in Germany. As soon as we no longer meet our own standards, we get help for it. Of course, it should be clean, but many of my friends and acquaintances overdo it with aseptic cleanliness and then wonder about bad moods, broken backs, lack of free time, and allergies. Of course, you can design your house to be cleaning-optimized – from my point of view, it's enough to keep the total impracticality in mind and not optimize every single component.

If the sculpture gets dusty
it stays great.
Life without it would be dull,
boring and lame.
