The topic is the biggest annoyance for me in our new build.

We have a terrace with a full south-facing orientation. Last year, we installed an awning there. However, I’m not really happy with it.
In summer, it’s still way too hot despite the awning; under the neighboring walnut tree, however, it’s much, much more pleasant.
I also don’t like that the patio furniture and the grill are always exposed to the full weather.
In early drafts of the house, an overhang was planned with the upper floor, which we unfortunately had to cancel at the time for cost reasons.

Now, after a year with the awning, we’re in the process of getting offers for a permanent roof. The whole thing should be executed as a flat roof with greenery. Especially because of the latter, I hope the terrace won’t heat up as much in summer.
We know it will make the adjoining kitchen/dining room darker, which is our biggest downside. However, the advantages outweigh that for us. We don’t like glass roofs at all, so they are out.

The money for the awning was partly learning money. If we sell it, we’ll get back about a quarter to half of our ~4k€ upfront costs. Luckily, we have space for it on the rooftop terrace, so it’s moving there. However, we actually hadn’t planned to install an awning there.

Conclusion for everyone in the planning phase: Plan something like this in from the start; we (especially I) deeply regret not having pursued it more consistently back then...

BTW: If anyone needs a Markilux 5010 with 5m width and 4m projection, I have one for sale.

Oh I love that too, we also have a bench in front of the door where I sit (when the temperatures allow) in the morning and enjoy a coffee, in the garden we have a large dining table and eventually a separate terrace for a lounging area will be created, garden planning is still completely behind ... ideally I would like a Sunball from Rosenthal but that will surely remain just a wish (probably not possible for various reasons). For us, the awning does not dominate (I am surprised myself since the cassette of those things seemed extremely massive/bulky to me in the store) but when closed it does not stand out and when open well it is huge but somehow also cozy, I will try later with photos. We chose anthracite for the frame (because it has to match the windows later) and light gray fabric (not particularly exciting or creative but you don’t get tired of it and it is more flexible regarding the rest) but with the chairs I went back to red.

There are several reasons for this:
[*]The leaf canopy of a tree has many shading layers, an awning only one. [*]The leaf canopy of a tree allows air circulation, an awning on a wall can cause air stagnation [*]The tree additionally provides evaporative cooling. A beech tree can transport about 400 liters of water through its leaves on a summer day. The awning is always dry.
Even with a fixed roof you will not get the pleasant shade of a tree or forest – so as not to incur another costly lesson. Green roofs are great (we also have one on the middle flat roof section – from a purely temperature-related perspective that would be too expensive for me). In the forest behind our house, it was over 10 degrees cooler on hot days last summer than in front of the house.

Thank you for the hints. I understand that it cannot be compared to a tree. However, I do expect a difference compared to the awning. The main reason for the greening is ultimately the appearance.

So here is the attempt with photos, unfortunately I can only get the awning like this on it but we are quite satisfied with it, we did not take any wind and sun sensors (that will happen later with the new windows including blinds) electric in and out and done.... we were able to mount the remote control on the wall so it doesn't get lost.
I hope this helps you with your decision-making?! Best regards
Alternatively, cream/beige as fabric would have been an option, but I thought the risk was too high that it would quickly look dirty?!

Nice that you carry through the red. It's not my thing, but it doesn't have to be. Grey and red fit perfectly!
