The topic is the biggest annoyance for me in our new build.
We have a terrace with a full south-facing orientation. Last year, we installed an awning there. However, I’m not really happy with it.
In summer, it’s still way too hot despite the awning; under the neighboring walnut tree, however, it’s much, much more pleasant.
I also don’t like that the patio furniture and the grill are always exposed to the full weather.
In early drafts of the house, an overhang was planned with the upper floor, which we unfortunately had to cancel at the time for cost reasons.
Now, after a year with the awning, we’re in the process of getting offers for a permanent roof. The whole thing should be executed as a flat roof with greenery. Especially because of the latter, I hope the terrace won’t heat up as much in summer.
We know it will make the adjoining kitchen/dining room darker, which is our biggest downside. However, the advantages outweigh that for us. We don’t like glass roofs at all, so they are out.
The money for the awning was partly learning money. If we sell it, we’ll get back about a quarter to half of our ~4k€ upfront costs. Luckily, we have space for it on the rooftop terrace, so it’s moving there. However, we actually hadn’t planned to install an awning there.
Conclusion for everyone in the planning phase: Plan something like this in from the start; we (especially I) deeply regret not having pursued it more consistently back then...
BTW: If anyone needs a Markilux 5010 with 5m width and 4m projection, I have one for sale.
