The lounge is in that area because it is a "separate" area. It is not our main area. Our main area with a normal seating group would then be covered.

Basically, I would get a roof immediately – but I am simply put off by the enormous price compared to the awning – so I am weighing it up...

That's exactly how I see it too. So far, we have experience with two "summers" on our terrace in our new build and have never sat outside in bad weather before. Basically, we really want shade.

We have a compromise between a cassette awning and a canopy, as our terrace is a fire department deployment area and may not be covered. A frame is installed on the left and right, in which the awning runs. This solution is very stable and wind-resistant. The awning fabric is also watertight in the rain.

Of course, you can argue and handle it that way.
However, if someone wants to stay seated even in drizzle or doesn’t want to worry at all about whether it will drizzle, this can also be understood.
Another advantage of a fixed roof is that dew does not settle on the furniture or, in the evening, when you still want to stay outside; it is always dry. I saw this dew on our glass roof and was glad that it was dry underneath.
The next person has arguments for the awning or the sail, and all of them are understandable. You just have to find what suits you without wanting to believe that you thereby have the inherently right solution.

In fact, I would rather tend to a pergola with an adjustable louvered roof. The advantage of an awning would then be attachment exclusively to the wall without posts.

I see it 100% like you – totally understandable for me as well – I am just trying to find what suits me and I also have my tendency – as I said, I still have some "problems" with the wind and the rain or the "durability" of the awning. That is why, of course, experience reports of a large awning with 3-4 meter depth and for example 6 meter width with wind and rain are quite crucial.

At our old house, we had two awnings from Arabella, which was quite decent back then. The larger of the two was probably about 6m wide and 3.5-4m deep. I don’t recall us using it often, but I believe there was some roof overhang there as well. Take a look at such a large thing in its extended state somewhere in person. I have been with them as well. With the cheap ones, I fear they will soon start squeaking, and the expensive ones are just expensive; besides, I didn’t like that "box" which nevertheless always remains visible. If it’s really just for sun or shade, I would buy a high-quality umbrella, and there are all sorts of shapes available. For us, it eventually happened that they became stained by birds and others, and for various reasons you don’t replace such a large fabric. But again, that is just my idea, so I would either build something solid with glass or go for the umbrella option.

The fixed option is currently too expensive for me, considering what I ultimately get (not really more than with an awning for my standards—provided the wind and rain issue is "sorted").

A fixed installed option will surely also bring problems in future design. I just put an awning on the wall and that’s it.

We currently have two relatively high-quality umbrellas concreted in—felt more annoying than convenient. It’s more of a temporary solution for me. I’d like a permanently shaded larger area without constantly having to position both umbrellas in the right direction somehow. Still, the umbrellas would be used for the lounge and the sandbox next to it—so I’d be killing two birds with one stone.
