My disability insurance only goes up to 60 - here you can clearly see how much Germans tend to go overboard with the full coverage mentality.

Best to insure disability insurance until the very last day... I don't see any gap there.

Bridging 7 years, I find that quite significant. Presumably, you can no longer save anything for private retirement during that time either. The statutory pension does not necessarily improve due to missing contributions, and so on.

Well, that's just the risk - I consider it VERY manageable and don't need to throw a lot of money down someone else's throat for it.

More likely is job loss at 60 years old - how do you cover that?

I just had a similar experience. The insurance representative immediately offered us new contracts instead of checking the follow-up insurance option. Result: an increase from 1300 to 1600 leads to new contributions for my wife €80 instead of €50 and for me €100 instead of €50. With a second BU we would have come off cheaper. Now we have also had the follow-up insurance guarantee checked. Let's see what comes out of it.

There is a very high incidence of cancer in both our families. So I do have concerns about that.

First with unemployment benefits. Otherwise, the only help is to remain universally employable. At least currently, I think I could start in every second tax office here, because they are endlessly looking. The pay would of course no longer match the current level, but better than nothing.

I'm curious... as I said, the follow-up insurance option was basically the same, just without a health check. They presented me with a new small disability insurance contract. I'll ask again.
