Hello everyone! I am brand new here and completely clueless. I have spent the last few days searching the WWW and absolutely find nothing on this topic. On 01.08.18 we "spontaneously" bought a two-family house (built in 1970) and now want to start the basement renovation. It has a ceiling height of 215cm and therefore may not be rented out as living space. But am I allowed to use it as private living space?? It consists of two rooms of 25 sqm each including a bathroom. These practically cry out for a more sensible use and would be wonderful as guest or bedrooms. Maybe someone can give me a tip.. Greetings from Lüneburg!

You can do whatever you want with your property - just not rent it out to outsiders ....

From my point of view no problem...

Hello neighbor, Basically, is right. However, there are regulations for residential purposes. For living rooms, there should be enough natural light as well as a second escape route. When repurposing buildings, e.g. converting an agricultural operation into a single-family house, a permit is required. This matters less in one’s own rooms. However, there can be serious problems if an accident like a fire occurs and someone is harmed or dies. It is difficult to mislead the investigations then. Financially annoying for property damage, in the latter case... inexcusable. Therefore: personal responsibility. P.s. A second rescue route or good and sufficient ventilation is, for example, achieved through a sufficiently large casemate with an adequate window. Keep the clearance area in mind :)

Why do you want to sleep in the basement? Don’t you have a bedroom in the house? If I had to sleep in the basement, I would never want to be your guest. I could at most imagine a workshop or a gym. But wanting to live there, I find absurd.

An extra playroom in the basement is ideal for small children. Incl. swing attached to the ceiling. Was glad to have had this room earlier with our twins - then it could look like a bomb had exploded.
