Such foresight is what the expert has. Stairs require structural engineering... Stairs cannot be changed later. The stairs have to fit. And they have to function. Everything else is subordinate in planning.

Definitely. You are a layperson. I am a layperson. But over at least 30 years, I have picked up a bit of knowledge on the side.
If you want to play architect in your own home, more power to you.., one can play. However, you should also recognize your limits.

So our architect was here on Tuesday and thought the room layout was quite good, I hope he was honest about that. He is now making a proper plan out of it, he will shift a few walls a bit. I will get back to you when we have something new. Until then, double thanks to all of you for the helpful suggestions.

No, he’s just glad he doesn’t have to think for himself. You gave him the plan – a mistake. Now you will never get a design from him, only a copy of your amateur attempts.

Don’t think negatively in that regard ... I had the same problem, my architect was just too stupid ... I then handed him your suggestion (for the upper floor) and said; exactly like this and no other way .......

Today I’m super happy about it and the architect is a thing of the past, even if it shouldn’t have gone that way, but I found another way

Okay, in my plan I have also incorporated suggestions from your draft in post #5, especially the position and type of staircase, which by the way he can and will make even more uniform compared to my last draft. The kitchen will still be changed (possibility for seating, possibly a pantry), the cleaning supply room will be removed.

But another question to everyone: What do I do with the trash bins? In our current rental semi-detached house there are 4 of them, which stand in our narrow prefab garage instead of a car. We can also quickly get there through the living room; in rain we only have to cross 2 meters of uncovered terrace area.

If I now place the house and garage far apart as drawn in the development plan from post #1 ( ), I find the route to take out the trash a bit far as long as the bins would stand in or behind the garage. And we often take out smaller amounts of trash during the day, not just diapers, but almost everything, so it’s not in the way or possibly starts to emit bad odors. (I also go out to the terrace from time to time with my e-cigarette, then I take some with me). What I would prefer most is a solution where the bins are not only housed, as there are many products like that to buy, but where you yourself can stand dry on the one hand and on the other hand you don’t stare at the bins from the terrace.

The location would ideally be close to the kitchen, so from the street view on the front left at or next to the house. Maybe build a small freestanding shed for that with the same brick as our house? A hedge is going to be planted between the house and garage anyway as a visual screen toward the street, which could then be interrupted by this shed.

Or build a roof with a side privacy screen attached to the house? We are generally still a bit unsure about coverings. I am also considering the idea of later creating a covered path between the house and garage (possibly with a transparent plastic roof, which is supposed to be overgrown by ivy). Also on the house itself a small fixed canopy would be nice, so I can “vape dry” even in bad weather. For a proper terrace roof for hot days we prefer a retractable but weatherproof awning. We don’t want to lose too much light through a fixed roof and glass roofs would need frequent maintenance not to look scruffy.

I am also just an amateur - that doesn't make it any better. I wouldn’t put them directly by the house. Even if you are perfectly tidy and clean, I believe they always smell a bit - especially in summer. They should also preferably be placed in a shady spot. We put ours behind the garage with a wooden enclosure. The distance from our house to the bin is about 12 meters. We manage that. How far would that be for you?
