Since the utility area in the north is also added (approx. 600 m2), I will probably also plan a small seating area/terrace in the north. But I still have to think about it. The morning sun in the east should be usable by making the terrace around the corner, so also on the south side by the living room.

Unfortunately, I can't provide views yet, because our planner is still one of the "old school" and is currently drawing the draft by hand. But I have already agreed with him that next time we will also get views.

Regardless, how would you build on the plot?

Hello,

now I have a question for you again: I sat down with the planner today and received the information that you are not allowed to put windows in a garage built on the property boundary (at least in Austria; only from a minimum distance of 2m). We have also planned 2 storage rooms and the technical room in the garage. Therefore, my question(s):

1. Do you think that a window (transom) or daylight in the garage, storage, and technical room is a must?

2. If yes, does anyone have experience with skylights on the flat roof instead of windows?

Why a window in the garage?

Hello Joho,

one possibility would also be a strip of windows in the garage door.
We recently saw this in a new housing development and the solution seemed very modern.

I personally am a fan of natural light in the garage,

but that is purely my subjective opinion...

Hello,

we were strongly advised against a window in the garage or a strip light in the garage door during a police security consultation.

This would give a burglar the opportunity to see whether a break-in is worthwhile.

Of course, if you only have an old rust bucket inside, a window can also protect against a break-in...;)

Regards,

Dirk

So daylight in the garage is actually not really necessary for me. I get ventilation/oxygen anyway through the garage door. However, in the meantime, I have planned a window facing south (next to the garage door) (clerestory), so that I at least get daylight in the garage when walking towards the entrance door of the single-family house.

The technical room in the current layout also gets a small window, since I can move 2 m away from the property boundary there.

What is special for us are rather the additional storage rooms in the garage (have a flat roof and no basement, therefore these rooms in the garage). I could actually live without daylight here, but especially in the storage room, a ventilation option would probably be advantageous...

What do you think about a glass or plastic dome (I don’t know the exact name) on the flat roof that can be opened? Are they technically critical or much more expensive than, for example, a clerestory? Does anyone have experience with this?

Here is the current garage layout (planned on the property boundary to the north and west; driveway/garage door to the south):

Best regards Jochen
