Network Technology 2016 for a Single-Family House

The question is, do you need virtual LANs? Do you want to, or have to, administer and configure a lot, or do you "just" need a switch? Do all ports need power (PoE)?

Really all ports with POE? That will cost you 600€ upwards for 48 ports. Of course, not all ports can supply power simultaneously according to the specification, you would be well into four figures with corresponding noise levels and possibly air conditioning depending on the environment.

Is your use case rather the following:
- more than 24 ports
- just plug and play and no other wishes
- one or the other device occasionally needs power over PoE
--> YES

I would take 2x24 port switches if you have the space, and retrofit PoE port-based via injectors if PoE devices actually come into use. Or alternatively add a small 8 port with PoE.

I would not do things halfway, but buy a single reasonable switch right away. In home networks, it usually hardly depends on any enterprise features, but mainly on a decent PoE configuration. I have had very good experiences with the Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch series. Their WLAN APs harmonize extremely well with it and are very good for covering a multi-story single-family house.

By the way, we bought a Cisco Managed Switch SG300-28 (whose potential is far from fully used, but whatever ...). If I ever actually use PoE, I am currently leaning towards the injector solution. We have 28 ports in the house that currently cannot all be used simultaneously.
