What is written here about the advantages/disadvantages is all well and good, but one should definitely base the "quality/features" of the hardware components on the usage behavior. Sometimes I really wonder what you guys do with the network at home. Sure, you have movies and music on a NAS, etc. But do you watch the movies exclusively from the NAS, listen to music 20 hours a day on 10 different devices simultaneously? In the home environment, you certainly won't notice whether switches are cascaded or not.

Alright, not everyone installs a NAS in the back. I would say that’s rather few. And having webcams around the house, I find that unusual as well. We only have a motion detector in the back. But well, it’s all a matter of taste. I’ll wait and see what our electrician makes appealing to us.

Yes, you will. Let a roommate copy something onto the NAS and at the same time watch a movie on Netflix in 4K when you are both connected to a Switch and the NAS and internet are on the other.

My switch isn't lying in the dust; it's properly mounted on the wall, and the blinking behind the cabinet doesn't bother anyone either.

Although it's off-topic, how many households actually operate a NAS, and how many watch in 4k or even have the devices for 4k? By that, I don’t just mean the TV but also their own eyes.

As for me, I can easily watch on my 3-year-old 42-inch HD CRT.

And if I had a crystal ball, yes, then I would play the lottery and not try to predict technological progress.

Of course, that's all a matter of personal taste, and everyone deserves their Gigabit LAN with enterprise switches.

But the fact is that data streams are getting thicker and thicker. Since cables allow more and more through, it seems fewer and fewer people find it necessary to optimize/reduce the data throughput of their products. I’m already smiling amusedly when my father proudly tells me about his 16 Mbps DSL connection. How cute!

Yes, it makes sense not to be stingy with the connections, but I don’t like to overdo it either.
