So the only argument I have against a utility room on the upper floor is the space problem!

You can take precautions against leaking water (properly sealing the floor + floor drain).
Our machine is super quiet, you can't even hear it spinning. And I am very sensitive to noises.
Laundry is washed and immediately put away in the closet next to the utility room. No hauling up and down the stairs.
Lint? Yeah, lint-free textiles have not yet been invented, you can vacuum them up!

The utility room upstairs is actually something I NEVER want to be without again!

What kind of wonder machine is that? And everything you list is associated with costs. Where does one hang laundry then? In the basement there is space anyway, in the upper floor it has to be planned expensively. Then you are immediately at 20,000 Euros for the laundry room.

Besides, a little exercise doesn't hurt many people nowadays. I'm glad to move a bit after an office day.

One reason to do laundry on the upper floor is if there is no basement.

No, the reason is that the laundry is done there and it is practical for that reason. Especially here, with children, the amount of laundry leads to daily use.

I also don’t put the fridge in the garden shed or the toilet on the roof just because it’s cheaper there and space is available.

The reason for washing in the basement is habit, because Grandma already did it that way and it's ingrained in the mind. But here, dozens of liters of water do not leak out every two weeks, the machines finish faster and have become significantly quieter.

I don’t have the toilet in the living room either, even though it would be more practical. But there are arguments for both, you have to see what is more important to you and how the space looks.

But now that you mention it... such a floor drain next to the couch would be really super practical

Either you plan the utility room large enough so that it can be done there – we don’t have that, unfortunately there wasn’t enough space left for the utility room (my dream utility room has enough space for hanging laundry and also a work area where the sewing machine has a fixed place so that for a quick repair you don’t always have to drag it out and set it up; as I said, unfortunately not realized like that for me) – or you just hang the laundry somewhere else upstairs. In winter I ALWAYS hang laundry inside because we already have very dry air, so that is very welcome. In summer I personally have the option to put the drying rack on the carport roof. But otherwise: in the bedroom, in the hallway, in the bathroom and open the window.
