I also gave this a lot of thought "back then". The rule to lay lengthwise to the light incidence comes, among other things, from the time when one wanted to avoid the joints on the long sides of parquet boards or laminate from standing out too much due to the shadow formation in the joint. In times of V-grooves, this "problem" is actually no longer one, since the groove is supposed to / allowed to be seen.
I would always
- lay long rooms and corridors in the longitudinal direction; these determine the direction in the floor/building.
- lay throughout the whole house or at least by floors in the same direction.
- only pay attention to the rule about the light incidence if the laying direction is not predetermined by the geometry of the room.
In our case, both the light incidence and the room geometry indicated a laying direction. Especially in long corridors, it really looks bad if wide boards are laid across. Believe it or not, the corridor appears wider when long, wide boards are laid lengthwise.
So in your case, I would not primarily consider the light incidence but rather follow the room and your gut!
