Hello fans,

I am moving, getting a used Faktum kitchen delivered and have to go to the hardware store beforehand to buy a new countertop and want to have the right hole cut for the sink.

The sink almost fills an 80 cm cabinet in width; the basin is wider than the draining part with the well-known wide grooves.

- why hardware store? The kitchen has an acacia countertop on the other side, and you don’t get that at Ikea, but at ...

- question 1: have you ever had an oval cutout sawed? (OK, this is a question beyond ..., but maybe someone can still say something)

- question 2: I only have a photo of the kitchen; the sink is no longer available – where do I get the template to have it cut properly?

P.S. unfortunately there is no URL with the kitchen photo – can I upload photos myself?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Is the cutout really oval, or a circular arc? Oval (= elliptical) would only be possible with a CNC milling machine (at the carpenter), but I believe you don’t want to know the prices for that... :D If it is a circular arc, they might be able to do it with a router, but no idea if your hardware store offers that and at what price.

Otherwise, you’re left to make the cutout yourself with a jigsaw. Although that’s also not so easy to get the cut perfectly perpendicular. In curves, the saw blade tends to drift outward at the bottom, especially with the thickness...

You could simply use the cutout from the old countertop as a template. Either trace it onto cardboard, or take the piece of countertop directly to the hardware store...

If the old countertop is no longer available, you’d have to do the following: Place the sink upside down on a sufficiently large piece of cardboard and trace exactly the outer contour. Then measure (at several points) how wide the edge is between the outer edge of the sink and the vertically standing metal, where the mounting claws sit. Paint this distance all around your just drawn outer contour, and you will get the required contour for the cutout. Check again to make sure you didn’t make any mistakes, then cut out the inner part. Your template should now fit the sink perfectly. If not, adjust again. If everything fits, off to the hardware store or saw it yourself.

Best regards

hello,

a good jigsaw has a blade adjustable at an angle or properly said, an adjustable miter. for that, you need neither a CNC router nor a wood rasp ;)

just a bit of finesse and a fresh sharp blade and plenty of calm.

keep in mind that you must not confuse the top and bottom edges, otherwise the basin will only fit upside down AND you’ll need a new board - in other words: think ahead well!

Correct, good jigsaws have an adjustable miter angle. But I have noticed it myself from time to time, especially with thick and hard materials, the blade does not stay straight in tight curves, but bends toward the outside of the curve. This causes, for example, a round hole to be larger on the underside than on the top side (where the jigsaw is). And curved saw blades only help to a limited extent, unfortunately...
