True words. When we are done, the children will want to start building. At least in theory, if they can afford it then.

After all, there is your house, which can be used as collateral

Regarding the desire to have children and not being able to imagine it. In my early 30s, I couldn't really picture it either; at 32 I became a dad - and it was not a mistake

Regarding wife and work. Our little one went to daycare at one year old, my wife works 30 hours/week and that works too. And I believe some bosses are glad to have such employees, as they often work more efficiently than the 40-hour sitters...

I don't find all this impossible here, but it wouldn't be for me, I agree with Zaba12

Nowadays, for many 30-year-olds, the desire to have children is not yet a topic. However, I know many for whom this attitude has changed drastically by 35, and suddenly the declared goal was to have two children by 40. That can quickly turn into stress and, under certain circumstances, also become a very expensive matter if it does not go as planned without assistance.

And in this situation, the original "Oh, we’ll just see – we can also imagine a life without children" quickly turns into "now we have decided to have children, and now we definitely want to realize this wish."

One should just keep that in mind. Of course, no one has to factor in any [Kinderwunschklinik]-costs, but the scenario should also still be feasible in 5-7 years with 1-2 children.

I was not trying to take your plans lightly. But nature or hormones can play strange tricks. Apart from that, I would find it extremely disadvantageous if any parental or part-time leave were to become due at the same time as the follow-up financing.

On the topic of desire to have children. I wish this had happened to me earlier, I am almost 40 and my daughter is only 3.. on the playground I feel my bones and before there was always something else more important.

The clock is ticking.

Okay, then let's just run through the scenario with 2 kids after all. Since I have no idea how much a child costs, I asked Aunt Google and it says that it’s on average 130k per child until they turn 18. Then I calculate 150k per child because we live in the South and I even tend to bring home surprises more often for the cats (with an only child it would be higher, but things like daycare, rompers, etc. can sometimes be reused from the firstborn).

So, 300k over 18 years is 16,600 per year and thus 1,400 per month.
The child benefit calculator tells me that in 2018 the state gives 194€ per month for child 1+2 each. For 2 children that is 388€.

So the actual child costs are 1,400-388 = a meager 1,000€ per month.
My husband earns 3,400 consistently (I'm calculating deliberately without promotion).
I will get parental allowance at first, 65% of my net income of 2,700€, so 1,755€.
Household income during this time: 5,155€.

So with me on parental leave plus 2 kids to take care of, we still have 4,155€. If we deduct a 2k installment, we’re still at 2k euros per month for insurance stuff, food, personal expenses, etc.

But then the fuel costs go down, since I won’t be driving 90km to work every day anymore, but rather shopping and no-idea-what trips around the neighborhood.

That should be manageable over a limited time until I can work full time again.
Or did I calculate super unrealistically? Seriously, I have absolutely no idea how much a child costs or how parental leave works. I just quickly looked up some figures online.
