Riester is a crutch and the K1300S statement still applies today. I would never put my money into politically motivated products with such a time horizon. The rules can change in a flash and in the end, benefits can be taken away again through detours in 30 years – just ask today's retirees about their once so great paid company pension. Moreover, it is a totally inflexible bureaucratic monster.

I bet that not even some Riester advisors have a 100% understanding of what they are doing.

For clarification, : it was about the difference between the amount on the housing subsidy account and the payout I received when withdrawing the capital. The difference (retention of the money by the provider??) is probably greater than the sum of the received allowances, so the whole thing was a loss-making deal. I should have simply saved what I paid myself.

It was all too uncertain for me as well. If I understood it correctly at all, I only pay taxes on the Riester money when it is paid out. But who knows what my tax rate will be then?

In general... if I don't understand something, I don't do it. I've been doing quite well with that ever since. Even if sometimes I might be "too dumb" here and there or appear "dumb". My favorite phrase is "Explain it to me like I'm 14". Often person XY gets confused because they themselves didn't understand it or simply don't feel like it. In the latter case, the person wasn't interested in providing proper advice anyway.

I also decided against Riester 4 years ago and used the company pension scheme. I save €240 monthly, including a €40 employer contribution, and net it costs me €100 less. I am aware that as a result I also receive less statutory pension insurance benefits among other things, but I did the math and it was definitely better than Riester.
