You had your chance to teach the basics, I’m not saying it again and now I’m off to eat the cookies myself with Yvonne.

Uff...

So in the basement the windows are a bigger problem. Is the cellar room officially considered living space? You will probably have to close the windows and the room will then officially be downgraded to a cellar room. (What you really do in there doesn’t matter)

On the ground floor, the loads from the upper floor must be properly transferred downward/outward. Would you be okay with 1-2 columns in the living room?

You definitely need a proper architect and structural engineer here.

Yes, not an easy thing, I know. Good question whether the basement room is officially considered living space. The plan says "Work." So it is probably designated as an office. Since there is underfloor heating in the room, it will probably be counted as living space.

That was exactly what my original question referred to. Columns are not really my thing, hence the question whether the concrete ceiling can be extended. Theoretically, (setting the cost issue aside) could that also be done in the basement to preserve the windows? That means letting the basement grow accordingly, maybe only in one direction and sacrificing a window. Or possibly inserting a steel beam horizontally to support the ceiling? Basically from left to right. Then the ceiling could be suspended, provided the beam is not too thick.

Then I will probably have no choice but to consult an architect / structural engineer. What do you think something like that costs approximately? I mean not having them say afterwards it’s not possible and I wasted 5,000€ for nothing.

Thanks, spyfromtheeast.

The steel beam is 6-7 meters long. It has to support not only the ceiling but also the floor above and the roof. It will be big and thick. No idea how big, but let's say 25cm height + casing. Would something like that be okay for you? I think it will look quite unusual if you need one over every old wall, then you have a kind of deep-set "cross" in the ceiling. What ceiling height do you have?

The initial consultation with the architect should be free of charge. You need to find someone who has a workable idea right away. This will then be developed and paid for.
