Carport or garage, which makes more sense?

No, that is just one of many arguments in favor of the garage door. The cheaper insurance has its reasons. Where did you get the 3.50 from?

The insurance gives you a discount for minimizing some possible claims. Lower risk of damage is an argument in favor of a garage door for me. This is not just about 3.50 but for example 300 euros deductible. Not to mention the annoyance.

But then you shouldn’t let your spouse drive either, nor should they let you, children, or other people ever :D
At least for me, the insurance horse would be saddled the other way around, namely first determining the need and then the appropriate and necessary insurance.
Here too, every type of construction has its advantages and disadvantages, or different criteria arise for each user on which they base such a decision.

What does that have to do with the garage door again? Exactly for those risks, the insurance charges you extra. Also for the lower risk for a vehicle parked in the garage with a discount. I don’t build the garage for the insurance, but so that my car is safely kept among other things.

I understand what you mean, but at least I would not let a decision for or against, even in the area of [Garage/Carport], be influenced by guidelines or calculations of an insurance company, not even on the topic of [Garage].

3.50 is a colloquial expression for = the argument doesn’t hold due to insignificance;)

But I recalculated it for you: with HUK for example, you pay exactly 11 euros more per year if the car is not parked in a lockable garage. However, the insurance terms state that it must have been locked as well - you have to prove that.

I fully agree with the argument that the garage is more of a utility space than it adds value for the car. Another neighbor, for example, has an old 3-series Touring (probably still worth around 5-6k euros) - the car is parked outside - while inside he has a workbench etc. then your theft argument applies if it’s about tools, for example.

Most people I know don’t use the garage as a garage, but as a utility space for tinkering. As mentioned above: it’s a matter of type - almost no one does it because of the car.
