If you’re on vacation or on the road with your car, a burglar immediately sees that the carport is empty. The closed garage door at least leaves some risk that a car might be inside.
So when we’re on vacation, one of the cars is parked in front of the door and one in the garage. No idea – I don’t get the theft argument :D
If possible, I would always build a closed garage. It provides storage space for car accessories, bicycles, gardening tools, Christmas decorations, suitcases, etc., if you don’t have the space inside the house. You can set up a small workshop... The car is better protected (moisture is not an issue in a well-built garage), and especially in winter you save yourself from scraping the windshield.
A colleague always keeps the windows in his garage tilted open – because of moisture. I would never build a garage.
Scraping doesn’t apply with electric cars anyway, since they all have a parking heater. I’m with you, the garage door would annoy me too.
But: If you are someone who likes to tinker or doesn’t even use the garage for the car (neighbor parks outside and the garage is extra storage, piled up with stuff so he can’t even drive in if he wanted to) then build a garage. If you already have doubts, then you’re probably not the garage type.
