Guest toilet. It's really a good thing, but not necessarily essential. My guests are welcome to use our bathroom. And a toilet for 2 people + 1 child and possibly a 2nd child + occasional guests is, I think, sufficient. (considering that many people don't even have a home)
I can only strongly recommend that you seriously consider a guest toilet. Especially if you don't have children yet. Kids tend to need the toilet at the most impossible times when they are just being potty trained, and then it has to be NOW IMMEDIATELY and not in 5 minutes, otherwise you have to clean up. Most of the time they need the toilet when it's already occupied :-D Or they are playing in the garden at some point, wearing dirty muddy clothes, dirty shoes, and have to walk through the whole house to get to the toilet, where Dad (or Mom) is in the shower or drying off, and then the dirty kid sneaks past you to the toilet ;-). Not very pleasant when you just got out of the shower and then stand in the sand.
I also grew up in an apartment with only one bathroom. But we were lucky that Grandma also lived in the house and had a guest toilet. I don't know how many times we used it because Dad was holding a meeting and occupied the toilet. Or as a teenager, you didn't always want to be in the bathroom with Mom and Dad when someone needed to go.
By zoning, it is meant that the sleeping area is separated from the living area and not everyone has to pass by the bedroom/kids' room. Especially if you have small children, they should sleep in a quieter area, especially since they often want to leave the door open. And if, in the evening when the children are supposed to be asleep, someone keeps turning on the light in the hallway and going to the toilet – especially when you have visitors – you quickly wish you had planned differently, if you had known that ;-)
