Pro or Contra basement, there have already been many threads here. Different opinions will always come out of it. We are building with one. Why? For various reasons. Our plot is 420sqm (there was no bigger one in the development area we wanted). But we already have to build two parking spaces on it. With a bit of space in front and behind, that's 2.5 parking spaces, house footprint roughly 100sqm plus a bit of terrace, so after subtracting a green strip all around the house, not much is left. If I skip the basement, I need alternative space for technology/utility room and storage as well as guest/hobby. Maybe not 1:1 but that already adds up to a few square meters. They first have to be built above ground. That costs (yes, certainly somewhat less) and also needs space, of which I don't have much. We are not hoarders but still there are some things that need to be stored. And somewhere the stuff has to go. And not only because of the not too big plot do I not belong to the advocates of the 70sqm garage where no car stands. If I had 800sqm plot or more, I might possibly also build without a basement.

I have my utility room on the upper floor and DESPITE THAT a basement!

We have a small plot of land and quite equipment-heavy hobbies - without a basement we would have either needed more floor space or a garage with sufficient storage space. There was no room for either.
So we have a basement, which, due to a slight slope, offers two rooms with natural light. One is a guest/fitness room, the other the workshop with a door to the outside. For us, the optimal solution. (at our place it looks similar to face26)

But every plot of land has its own optimal solution. Therefore, I find a discussion before you own a plot of land quite pointless.
You can say what preference you have, but nothing more.

If I had a 1000sqm plot, my optimal solution might also be different...

For us, it was a no-brainer - sufficiently sized plot and a lot of soil class 7. Nevertheless, I stick to my opinion: Whoever does not want a basement should not build one. Building with a basement is not cheaper even on a slope - unless the floor is called a basement for "baupolitischen" reasons only.

I am asking myself this question right now too! I am planning to build a semi-detached house. According to the development plan, I am allowed to build 3 stories. Now we are in the planning phase and are wondering what is better? House with a basement and 2 living levels or house without a basement and 3 living levels! Unfortunately, I won't be able to afford 3 living levels with a basement...

If you have the choice, then rather 3 above-ground floors. More light and air. And if you want to use the basement as living space, it would anyway be more expensive than building above ground. And if a utility basement is desired, you can alternatively simply leave the top floor in better shell construction or build it as an attic/loft with a proper staircase.

This does not change the negative feeling the original poster has about the basement. Basements for laundry, hobby, technology and storage remain basement uses as they were built 50, but also 30 years ago. Three of these uses can fit into 15 sqm, hobby possibly with good room layout in the ground floor, upper floor or attic.
