What kind of commitment? I'm looking for a craftsman. If he did a good job, we’ll never see each other again. But whoever has money to spend on [Romantik] may do so.

Not me. I'm really not someone who throws money around carelessly. Still, I value commitment, long, steady business relationships, buy everything from the local electrician, whatever he happens to offer, might pay €100 more for a washing machine than at the electronics store, always buy the car from the same dealer, etc. You probably think he's crazy, that he's completely inflexible and just throws his money at them... but that's actually not the case. How often do I get service without a bill! How often do I get a different price than the occasional customer! After the move, my electrician installed all the lights for us for free, the old ones, the ones purchased from him, and also those I got as gifts for the topping-out ceremony. Extending a washing machine hose, Karsten, no problem, here, take it with you and connect it yourself... The plumber and heating technician said, oh, a second outdoor faucet, we won't even talk about that, we'll just take care of it immediately. Do ut des, that's how the world works. The modern adaptive pragmatics (Sinus milieu new development area) have forgotten that or never learned it. Karsten

That does not exclude each other at all. You are talking about the local craftsman around the corner. It is logical that he cannot compete with the cheapest stingy prices from the internet. Also, paying for the service is perfectly fine and may even pay off monetarily. And if not, that is also okay.

But that is something different from the contractor brought in by the general contractor (GU), who likes to double or even more than double the material costs. Unlike in your example, I have no commitment there. Convenience wins, the potential reimbursement when removing the trade is marginal, and disposing of newly installed standard goods after a few weeks and replacing them with something reasonable is something that few do for economic and ecological reasons. So a large proportion of customers pay whatever is served up.

For me, one of the biggest reasons we decided against a GU. Not to save money, but to get solid companies from the region with service and reasonable goods – and commitment – for the same price.

I only renovated and cannot comment on the GU prices. But even I went through everything with the self-chosen plumber. And overall, he was fair. His standard offer for materials was marginally more expensive than online. Since he was so fair here, I got everything from him. I might have saved about €3000 overall (the contract included heating, radiators, water, sewage, bathroom completely without tiles), but it wasn’t worth it to me. He was fair and often came by himself as the boss, despite a 30 km one-way trip. I would not have paid exorbitant prices. Then standard or prepare and that’s that. I can also screw on a bowl myself.

There is certainly a difference whether the general contractor is a local small one or a big one like Hans von Heyden. In the latter case, you would just be a customer number, and the brought-in craftsmen often come from Eggesin just before Stettin because they are shamelessly cheap. My general contractor handed over what he couldn’t do himself, in coordination with my wife and me, to local, named companies whose bosses we have known for years, who party with us on the same level, where everyone is on a first-name basis. I know, hardly to be expected in Frankfurt. We only had four external companies on site anyway, plumbing, electrical, garden, plaster, and screed.
