I definitely wouldn’t give it one. It would just be in the way.

I also wouldn’t give the kitchen a door, but the living room would have one.

The staircase in the living room would be an absolute no-go for me; you would never have any peace there. But that question wasn’t asked!

Ok, first of all, thanks to everyone for the helpful answers! My floor plan has already been discussed many times (and funnily enough always criticized by the same people), so once again: I am building for myself and not for you ;-)

My wife and I are two people and will remain so, meaning the house will never be very noisy. In our current rental apartment, all the doors are basically always open (since we have cats), so we are considering leaving them out. But you have convinced me to at least keep the door from the hallway to the living room; I believe that actually makes it feel a bit more homely.

For the pantry, we planned a sliding door in front of the wall, which we will do later as our own work. It’s only a mini pantry anyway, which (hopefully) won’t look too messy.

The stairway has also been discussed many times here in the forum. My impression: either you love a stairway as a central style element (of course, suitably stylishly designed) or you hate it. There is nothing in between. It’s up to each person; we like it.

Cheers!

No kids, no problem :D Otherwise: Better not. My older one once caught the younger one's fingers in the sliding door once and head once while roughhousing at nearly two years old. My mother then blocked the door so firmly with a wedge that it no longer opens at all. Normal doors are already annoying, but sliding doors are hell.

You want a stairway to the basement right next to the sofa??? That really is not an eye-catcher.

Fortunately, a door still has a purpose. Does your house have a door too, or did you do without one because it’s in the way? We also have a staircase centrally located and open… right next to our sofa: very stylish and personal chic. But definitely not a basement staircase…! That’s something completely different from a show staircase or a staircase in an open living area that is meant to have a positive effect when looked at, something you enjoy, I don’t know… As I said before: it was almost perfect with the living room and kitchen layout… now you’ve brought several negative aspects into the house.

Maybe you misunderstood the floor plan. It’s not just a basement stairway. It also goes up to the upper floor. Our staircase will look somewhat like this, but with Nero Assoluto as the covering and not wood, yet with exactly this railing and built up just as high towards the basement. Still that bad? ;-)
