Hello,

I am new here and want to say first of all that I have already read many informative posts here.
Really great forum!

We want to build a shell house.
A very important question I want to ask first:

How is it with you regarding the acceptance of owner-performed work?
We would like to include electrical, underfloor heating/plumbing as owner-performed work requiring acceptance.

Now these owner-performed works must be accepted by an "external" master craftsman company.

Are there any problems with that?
Do the companies resist accepting work they have not performed themselves?

Regards
laley

Hello,

I think DIY is always a tricky issue, not only because of the often incorrect assessment of the actual time and material effort.
Example: with the installation of the insulation on the outside of the basement, we could have saved around €2,000 in labor costs. However, in this case, I do not expose myself to the risk that, if something goes wrong, warranty services will not be provided.
Then you get statements like "You used an unauthorized adhesive that damaged the sealing" or similar. This has happened before.

It's different, for example, with plastering/painting inside. Here I could live with the paint peeling off sometimes. Or also with the installation of the interior doors. If I mess up here, I could live with the resulting defects, and these would have no impact on the house as such and do not pose any danger in any way.

If I were an electrician, of course, the matter would look different. Then I would know what I’m doing

Regards...

Hi, I can already imagine that some people overestimate themselves. But I am professionally skilled (locksmith) and eager to finally work on my own house. Of course, I don’t know exactly how long all this will take, but we have also planned 6 months for our own work and I think that is sufficient!? I would also be cautious with things like insulating the cellar, but we are building without a cellar. And finally, all my work will be inspected by the construction manager and/or a master craftsman’s company as long as I can find a company... Maybe we will at least book the protime package since we have the least experience in heating/plumbing and electrical work. Everything else is doable for us. Regards LaLey

So what now? What do you want to do yourself then?

Well, we DO want to contribute electrical work, underfloor heating/plumbing as our own labor. But from what I have read here, it seems difficult to find companies that will inspect my own work. Additionally, we have little experience in electrical work, underfloor heating/plumbing.

Hello,

...Then better not do it. Contributing work in areas where you have no experience is not good. And it will really be hard to find a master craftsman who will stand behind what you have built.
