I do not find that very reliable. After all, there is no building permit yet, is there? How long that takes depends a lot on where and how you want to build. Is there a development plan for your plot of land? If not, then shortened procedures are ruled out and such a permit can certainly take months.

Self-sufficiency is not the goal. We have absolutely no talent for ideological stubbornness. We started growing vegetables on a few square meters years ago – it’s fun and tastes good. Chickens are more of a wish of my wife – I’m looking forward to fresh eggs. We finally have enough space on the property.

Who is "one" anyway? Whoever is willing to take the risk with a smile and possibly live "alternatively" for a few months can just do it that way. From what you can experience in the process, you can tell entertaining stories for years.

Chickens appeal to me too. My husband thinks I’m crazy, my parents say, "Child, don’t do it, there’s a reason those animals had to go before the cows."

There will not be many chickens, maybe four or five and no rooster. My only concern is that they will not live very long because there are many predators here. I will have to build and craft a lot.

At night, the raccoon sits next to the chicken coop at my place. I have installed wire fences with double chain link. Nothing can get in there. There should be no spot open that is bigger than a chicken egg. The backside is partly bricked or screwed with triple OSB boards. Since I breed and sell chickens, I constantly have people here whose martens and the like have completely emptied their coop. The raccoon can, for example, bite through wood and open enclosures that are not properly locked if there is only a flimsy latch or hook. My coop door is now secured four times. Additionally, I have concrete slabs all around the outside of the coop so that no one can dig under. Except for one hen that a bird of prey got during the day, everything is fine.
