Wooden windows need thorough repainting after 20 years (with pictures)

I went through the procedure last summer. Preparing the apartment for re-rental: completely sanding down and repainting 4 skylights. You just have to get through that if you want it to look nice. But with the right equipment, honestly it’s only half as bad. Just don’t overdo it, otherwise it really takes a toll on your arms. Don’t forget dust extraction and hearing protection.
For 2 other windows in the apartment, I still had to use paint afterwards: After the last tenant’s dog had to try its teeth on them, I first had to sand down and fill all the marks. Only paint helped after that.

Morning, do you have photos of it? How did you handle the transition to the rebate?

I only have the before and after photos. So nothing special. The crease wasn’t a problem either, I just had to change the sandpaper more often for the fine work.

I can only agree with Fummelbrett's opinion. Once you've done that, you'll have peace for years. So get to the windows and hang in there.

That is interesting, because we have the same problem with the last 3 old windows in the house. However, our windows are from 1992 and only double-glazed, so they will be replaced next year with plastic-aluminum windows with triple glazing, just like we have already done with the other windows in the house.

Would you at least roughly oil the windows again for the coming winter, or can you completely skip that if they are going to be replaced by winter 2019 anyway? For us, the windows look even worse in the same spot, meaning there is even more bare wood, although the wood itself does not look damaged so far. Or would it be better to apply some protection after all; keyword moisture (damage)?

I think so too, they won't rot away in one winter anyway, and if they do, oiling probably won't help anymore.
