You "must" settle this directly with your neighbors!

What use is it to put up a privacy screen of 1k or 2k and achieve no acoustic improvement?

Maybe 5 m of proper soundproofing will help. For that, you need to get advice as already suggested.

I believe I won't get around at least 15 meters. Regarding soundproofing, I have also done some reading, and the common consensus is that there must be no gaps in the soundproofing, as otherwise the sound will find its way around. That makes sense, after all, it is a wave. Since we have almost 20 meters of completely open property boundary, 5 meters will almost certainly bring me no improvement. The wooden fence probably won't either. The situation is stuck like this, I would really prefer to move out. :(

What does your husband say about the situation?

It can be, but it shouldn't!

That should probably only be considered as a last resort after all other possibilities have been exhausted. I still see a truly open and honest conversation as the best approach, where the neighbors address your "problem" and even if it is out of pure consideration; they don’t have to understand it. People are afraid of this because it can also end badly, but half measures don’t help either. What would they gain if suddenly someone with pit bulls moves in and all the sons play drums.... It’s worth a try, but it should be well prepared; you can also get competent advice for this! Only if none of this works, and only then!, can you still think about moving out if it makes you feel bad. That sounds probably dreadful right now but who knows......you already have thoughts about it and........there’s a beginning in every start..... ;). But there’s still plenty of room before that! A structural measure probably won’t solve it.

How should this (have) work(ed) in practice? Sell the house and buy or build a new one? How is one supposed to explain this to the ‘subsequent buyers’? As far as I know, such problems with neighbors should be addressed. Otherwise, it would amount to fraudulent misrepresentation (?). Moreover, the new neighborhood would also be uncertain.
