What nonsense. I can create thousands of life-threatening situations for my children at home if I behave in a grossly negligent manner. I also don’t go into my craft room with my little ones, turn on my circular saw and leave the little one alone with it. Or Or Or. Aside from that, we have a controlled residential ventilation system; the windows are opened at most for cleaning. And our daughter has long been able to push objects around and climb up, so a few more centimeters in height wouldn’t be any protection either.

As an engineer you should know that rules are not made based on logic. The regulation is MADE EXACTLY for the case I mentioned above. If a child really does something "complicated," it can fall down anytime and anywhere, and you cannot evade your supervisory duty. However, if falling down is made so easy as described, it is more than negligent and simply not allowed by the legislator. A circular saw is a ridiculous example and the ventilation system is no excuse for this method. What if the system is turned off and ventilation happens in three years? People know enough excuses. The only option would be that the window can only be tilted at the top and proper opening is mechanically permanently prevented.

My windows are according to regulations, completely legal, without French balcony. Balcony, completely according to law, no matter how logical or illogical. As soon as a window can be opened more than tilted, in my opinion there is always a risk for children to fall out (even adults sometimes fall). My little one already pushes chairs or similar to places she can't reach, so the height of the window is almost irrelevant. I wouldn't know where I actually make it easier, except that nothing has to be pushed up.

We do not need to discuss the logic of laws and rules. If the legislator wants a 90cm parapet height in one piece without a step, then that is just how it is. We (or rather I) would also prefer floor-to-ceiling windows without the fixed part at the bottom and without the grate in front. But that is simply not allowed and the matter is settled. However, we now have a variant that not everyone here in the area has. Most have the French style with a grate or no floor-to-ceiling windows at all.

Fully agree.

I would have liked that on the upper floor too.

When it became clear to me: That requires these grids everywhere AND it’s even more expensive because of that. My Swabian heart beat faster, I took the split version (floor-to-ceiling, but can only be opened from 90 cm).

Saved money. No grids – which I don’t like at all – I see them everywhere in the neighborhood. Looks like they are glued onto the house. Not my thing.

And honestly: Okay, I can’t open the windows on the upper floor floor-to-ceiling. Fine. But whether I could and have the grid at knee height, or now not and there’s a piece of window... almost the same, at least for me.

Best regards
Thorsten
