We have in the upper floor at the lower part of the windows baluster elements (about 1/3). Also for exactly the same reasons. What we liked visually as fall protection was unaffordable. The galvanized grids were out of the question.
So the baluster elements came into play. In terms of price, these were neutral since the grids were omitted. Another advantage: Fixed glazing was then naturally executed according to DIN 18008 as laminated safety glass (P4).
This way, the appearance is without disturbing grids. However, there is a white band running all around, which does not disturb the appearance at all.
Cleaning can be done with a ladder from the outside. This does not pose a problem. You don't have to open the window to let air in if you have a controlled residential ventilation system, as the original poster plans.
