A normal awning is not a solution for you? That seems a bit much to me too, considering the neighbor mentioned something like 30k for a conservatory and carport together. Built by a small chain active in southern Germany. I don’t know the details, so you’re certainly comparing apples and oranges. Would self-assembly be an option? On ’s tip, I know a provider who ships kits relatively affordably.

Hello WilderSueden, we had several awning installers on site, the problem is the tow that is not really statically load-bearing (see picture). Attaching it to the end board is not statically possible and the height after extending 2m would only be about 180cm (I am 2m tall...), one wanted us to dismantle the tow so he could install his awning, a third wanted to go to the house wall under the tow (ouch). We don't really dare to build it ourselves, and because it has to be an on-roof solution, most kits are out anyway, or is there a suitable option? I could organize a few helpers with more than just two left hands.

Is it only about better shading for you or also weather protection? If only shading, I would work with a sun sail. can show a nice solution for that.

For weather protection, your extension is really impractical. Then maybe rather vertical elements?

Yes, rooftop installation is certainly one of the key reasons why it is so expensive. I can't think of any kit for that off the top of my head either. For a kit, it would have to be attached to the end board or supported at the back with posts, almost like a carport or pavilion.

Is "just waiting 2 years" an option? Glass is absolutely scarce at the moment, my neighbors have been waiting for windows for 4 months, aluminum is also more expensive than ever... both materials require a lot of energy in production, which is insanely expensive right now.

yes, waiting is of course an option. We will have the garden with terraces newly laid out at the beginning of next year, so it would have been nice to integrate the point foundations into the construction measure and complete everything in one go. However, the delivery times for the elements are already 4-6 months (for both offers received), so it probably won’t be a perfect landing anyway. I don’t know how you feel, but such a roof is, given the overall weather situation, a pure luxury problem and one has to be grateful that one can even think about it. However, this does not lead to a fatalistic attitude of just closing one’s eyes and getting through it, at least not for us. At the prices asked, everyone who has already completed the project can consider themselves lucky. We have just put our photovoltaic system into operation (12 months from accepted offer to commissioning) and see that we were actually lucky (quote from the system builder: inverters can currently be weighed with gold....). Of course, projects can be killed by sitting them out, but in this case with the roof waiting is apparently the only sensible option, or else the umbrella solution (no comparison, I know...)
