Sink in the laundry room?

We have a utility room on the upper floor of our two-story house for the washing machine, dryer, drying rack, ironing, and some cabinets if possible (e.g., towels, bed sheets, etc. - general stuff). The floor of the room is to be tiled, but actually no wall tiles are planned.

Directly next to it is the bathroom with an extra-large steel bathtub and extra-large ceramic washbasin as well as a walk-in shower with overhead and hand shower (unlike sanitary acrylic and mineral cast, steel and ceramic are much more resistant to chemicals; a hand shower in a tiled shower is also practical; hence the special mentions).

That’s it for the upper floor, now for the ground floor. There is also a utility room with tiled floors without any laundry-related fixtures as well as a washbasin and a shower with hand shower, also tiled.

Now the question: Should we possibly install a washbasin in the utility room on the upper floor (laundry room)? Or is the bathroom next door sufficient when you really need running water or the bathroom on the ground floor? My wife also said when asked, we don’t need it. She hardly ever washes anything by hand anyway, and in an emergency one of the bathrooms could be used.

We might be lacking experience here; do kids ever get their clothes so dirty that the washing machine is too delicate for them, or is that a silly thought? What could one use such a washbasin in the laundry room for, or is it not needed at all?

We will also use it, for example, to empty the water from the dryer.

A utility sink belongs in every utility room of a rural household. Not only can you empty the dryer container there, which you could just pour out onto the yard, but also empty dirty water buckets, fill buckets, do wet grinding work on smaller workpieces, clean fish, wash oily hands, etc. These sinks made of enamel cast iron are dirt cheap and totally practical. I also think that a washbasin cannot hurt if there is enough space.

So, you probably won’t be cleaning fish upstairs. It’s about the water from the dryer as well as possibly hand washing or soaking. We do all that with 2 people in the adjacent bathroom. But we have certainly given up on much more than what you will build. In that respect, it would be the last thing I would skimp on if every special part is being installed everywhere anyway.

What Nordlys describes certainly takes place in the utility room on the ground floor.

Regarding the laundry and ironing room, I am undecided. On one hand, you have the bathroom right next to it, and a sink also requires space. A tiled backsplash would then be quite good. On the other hand, there are already connections for the washing machine and dryer, so the additional effort would be minimal, and water would be directly available for all eventualities.

How often does one have to empty something from a dryer (let's take a high-end device)? Aren't they connected just like a washing machine?

I think I would leave it out (saves money, doesn't need cleaning, saves space). The few/rare tasks (washing machine lint filter) can then be done with a bucket.
